COMMITMENT, INNOVATION AND LEADERSHIP, VALUES OF PRO WOMEN
In a historically masculine environment, Gran Colombia Gold is committed to the inclusion of women and the promotion of gender equality, from the generation of employment opportunities to the promotion of productive projects for communities.
Due to its unique characteristics, the development of mining at a global and local level has been markedly guided by men. However, in recent decades and due to the changes promoted in social, economic and legislative spheres, women have become a key agent in companies and the mining sector is no exception.
Internally, Gran Colombia Gold has redefined the profile of women in mining, calling her PRO Woman: a leader and entrepreneur, committed, innovative, respectful, a woman who with discipline achieves goals and meets objectives.
"For Gran Colombia Gold, the role of women in mining is fundamental: with their vision of the world, their way of doing tasks and their dedication, women contribute their knowledge and emotions, enriching all the processes of the mining production chain." Said Serafino Iacono, Executive Chairman of GCM Mining.
The company has more than 270 women who work in positions ranging from heavy machinery operators, mine managers to senior management positions. Jenny Palacio is one of these women, who is a chemical engineer and one of the shift leaders of the Polymetallics Plant, the first plant of its type in Colombia, in which the lead and zinc concentrates left over from the extraction process are recovered. of gold and silver.
Jenny defines herself as determined, determined and adventurous. “Since my internship in my career, I have encountered the challenges of engineering and challenges on a personal level for having chosen a sector dominated by men such as mining. By demonstrating my skills, I have earned the respect and admiration of collaborators, operational staff and my administrative peers.”
Jenny's work in the mining sector has been highlighted and recognized by the regional government. In 2021, she received the Woman Leader in Mining award from the Government of Antioquia.
Externally, and with the Women Leaders and Entrepreneurs initiative, Gran Colombia Gold seeks to provide women and girls in the municipalities where it operates, training opportunities that allow them to become entrepreneurs. In this regard, and in alliance with the Sena, the Jewelry Technique is taught in the municipality of Segovia, benefiting 16 women who receive theoretical-practical classes for a year.
Additionally, during 2020 and 2021 and due to the pandemic, with the Tapabocas por la Vida program, more than 400,000 masks were manufactured, made by women from clothing workshops in Segovia and Remedios.
“Our purpose as a company is to promote self-management, so that women in the communities of our subregion are capable of developing productive and entrepreneurial projects that allow them to generate their own resources.” Said José Ignacio Noguera Gómez, Vice President of Corporate Affairs of Gran Colombia Gold.
